Etsy's photo rules and mockups

Etsy wants listing photos to show the item a buyer will actually receive. For print-on-demand products — your design printed on a blank shirt, mug or print by a production partner — a mockup shows exactly that, and it is how most POD listings are illustrated. Two things to keep in mind:

• Be accurate. Match the shirt color, print size and placement your provider really produces, and use your provider's photos or a real sample for at least one image when you can.
• Declare your production partner. Etsy requires sellers who work with a print provider to list it on the listing.

For items you make yourself by hand, use real photos of the product as your main images — a mockup is not a substitute there.

Tips for mockups that sell

• Use a transparent PNG at least 2000 px wide so the edges stay sharp.
• Keep the first photo simple: one product, plain background, design clearly visible at thumbnail size.
• Add color variations as extra photos so buyers see every option.
• Pair the mockup with a size chart and a close-up of your design.
