Etsy Attributes and Categories: The Free Keywords You Shouldn’t Waste Tags On

Your category and attributes already work like tags. Fill them in properly and your 13 tags can go after searches you aren’t covering yet.

Etsy Attributes and Categories: The Free Keywords You Shouldn’t Waste Tags On

Most tag advice starts and ends with the 13 tag boxes. But Etsy gives every listing more search phrases than that. The category you pick and the attributes you fill in (color, material, occasion, holiday, style and so on) are matched against buyer searches too.

Etsy says it plainly in its Seller Handbook article on keywords: categories "act like tags", each attribute you add "acts like a tag", and "you don't need to add tags that repeat the phrases that appear in your categories and attributes." That is good news. It means a tag spent on "blue" or "wedding" may be a wasted slot, and those slots can go to searches nothing else in your listing covers.

What counts as a category and an attribute

The category is the path you choose when you create the listing, for example Jewelry > Necklaces > Pendants. Every level of that path describes your item.

Attributes are the extra fields Etsy shows after you choose a category. They change from one category to another. Common ones are:

  • Primary and secondary color
  • Material (and sometimes the specific metal, fabric or wood)
  • Occasion (birthday, wedding, anniversary…)
  • Holiday (Christmas, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day…)
  • Style, theme, size, room, recipient, depending on the category

Many attributes are also used as search filters. A buyer who searches "necklace" and then filters by "Gold" or "Anniversary" only sees listings where that attribute is filled in. An empty attribute can hide your listing from a filtered search even when the item matches.

Step 1: choose the most specific category

Always go as deep as the category tree allows. "Home & Living" says almost nothing; "Home & Living > Home Décor > Candles & Holders > Candles" tells Etsy exactly what the item is and unlocks the attributes that fit candles.

If two categories seem possible, pick the one a buyer would expect to browse. A personalized cutting board is a kitchen item first, even if people buy it as a wedding gift: the gift angle can go in the occasion attribute and your tags.

Step 2: fill in every attribute that is true

Go through the attribute list and fill in everything that honestly describes the item. Accuracy matters more than volume: a buyer who filters by "Silver" and receives gold-plated brass will leave a review about it.

  • Colors: pick the color a buyer sees first as primary, the second most visible as secondary.
  • Occasion and holiday: fill them in if the item is genuinely made or styled for it. Seasonal attributes can be changed later, so update them when the season changes.
  • Materials: list the main ones in the materials field too.

Step 3: write the 13 tags around what is left

Now look at your tags with fresh eyes. Any tag that is an exact match for your category or an attribute can usually be replaced. Etsy's guidance is to keep tags unique and use all 13, as multi-word phrases of up to 20 characters. Use the freed slots for:

  • Specific product phrases buyers type: "initial bar necklace", "soy candle tin".
  • Recipients and uses that no attribute covers: "gift for nurse", "new home gift".
  • Style words outside the attribute list: "cottagecore decor", "minimalist jewelry".
  • Synonyms and regional terms: "personalised" and "personalized", "mum" and "mom". Etsy's handbook names regional phrases as something to add yourself.

Two rules from the same Etsy article save you more slots: don't add plurals (Etsy matches root words, so "candle" covers "candles"), and don't add misspellings (Etsy search already corrects common mistakes).

A worked example: a gold initial necklace

Here is a listing before and after applying the three steps.

Category: Jewelry > Necklaces > Pendants.
Attributes filled in: primary color Gold, material Gold-filled, occasion Birthday, holiday Mother's Day, recipient Women.

Before (tags that repeat the listing data)After (tags that add new searches)
necklaceinitial necklace
gold necklaceletter pendant
pendantcustom initial charm
golddainty name necklace
birthday giftgift for her
mothers daybridesmaid gift
jewelryminimalist jewelry
gold filledlayering necklace
gift for womenmonogram necklace
necklacesgift for best friend
gold pendantgraduation gift
giftpersonalised gift
(empty)everyday necklace

The "before" set spends most slots on single words and on phrases the category and attributes already cover ("pendant", "gold", "birthday", "Mother's Day"). The "after" set keeps "gift for her" because buyers type exactly that, then adds recipients, occasions and styles the listing didn't mention anywhere else. Every tag is 20 characters or fewer.

Not a strict ban. Etsy says you don't need to repeat categories and attributes, not that repeating them is penalized. If a phrase that contains an attribute word is a common search on its own ("gold initial necklace"), it can still earn a tag or a place in your title. What you avoid is spending slots on the bare attribute word.

Common mistakes

  1. Leaving attributes empty. They take a minute and they put you into filtered searches.
  2. Choosing a broad category. You lose the specific attributes and the precise category match.
  3. Tagging single words. Etsy's own example: "custom bracelet" is stronger than "custom" and "bracelet".
  4. Repeating the same tag set on every listing. Similar listings should share a core and differ on color, scent, size or recipient.
  5. Forgetting seasonal attributes. A "Christmas" holiday attribute left on in March doesn't help anyone.

Check that it worked

Give the changes two to four weeks, then open your Etsy Stats and look at the search terms that brought visitors to the listing. You are looking for two things:

  • New search terms that match the tags you added in the freed slots. That shows the new tags are opening new doors.
  • Filter-style searches such as a color, material or occasion combined with your product word. Those often come from attributes you filled in.

Keep the tags that bring visits, replace two or three that bring nothing, and note the date so you can compare again a month later. Seasonal attributes deserve a reminder in your calendar: switch "Christmas" off in January and "Valentine's Day" on in late December, so your listings follow what buyers are filtering for.

Where tags still matter most

Categories and attributes come from fixed lists. Tags are the only place where you choose the exact words. That makes them the right place for the specific, long-tail phrases that describe what is special about your item, which is exactly what Etsy's handbook recommends targeting. If you'd rather start from a draft, ListifyAI's Listing Generator suggests a title, 13 tags of 20 characters or fewer and a description from a product photo. You still choose the category and attributes in Etsy, and you check every tag against your item before publishing.

Quick answers

Do Etsy attributes count as tags?

Etsy says each attribute you add acts like a tag, and its categories act like tags too. You don't need tags that are exact matches for them.

Should I repeat my category in my tags?

Not as a bare phrase. If the exact phrase appears in your category, Etsy already matches it. Use the slot for a more specific phrase that includes extra detail.

How long can an Etsy tag be?

Up to 20 characters, spaces included, and you can add 13 tags per listing. Multi-word phrases work better than single words.

Do I need plurals or misspellings as tags?

No. Etsy matches root words, so singular and plural are covered, and its search already redirects common misspellings.
