Etsy Ads can be a powerful growth tool โ or a money pit. The difference is knowing when to turn them on, how to budget, and how to read the results.
How Etsy Ads work
Etsy Ads (formerly called Promoted Listings) show your listings at the top of Etsy search results and on other pages. You pay per click (CPC โ cost per click). Etsy determines which listings to show based on bid relevance and your daily budget.
You don't choose keywords manually โ Etsy chooses when to show your ad based on its algorithm. Your job is to set the budget and let Etsy optimize.
When NOT to use Etsy Ads (yet)
This is the most important section. Ads amplify what's already working โ they don't fix broken listings.
Don't run Etsy Ads if:
- Your listing has never sold organically
- You have fewer than 5 reviews in your shop
- Your first photo doesn't earn clicks (low click-through rate)
- Your price is uncompetitive for the category
- Your description or tags are thin
Spending $5/day to drive traffic to a listing that doesn't convert = burning money. Fix the listing first.
When to turn on Etsy Ads
You're ready for ads when:
- The listing has at least 1 organic sale
- Your shop has 10+ reviews
- Your photos are professional quality
- Your price is at or below mid-market for the niche
- You've done full SEO (all 13 tags, 140-char title)
Budget strategy
Starting out
Start with $1-3/day. Give it 14 days minimum before making judgments. Etsy's algorithm needs time to learn which searches trigger your listing.
Scaling up
If after 14 days your ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) is above 3:1 (for every $1 spent, you earn $3+ in revenue), gradually increase your budget by $1/day per week.
Seasonal budgets
Double or triple your budget during peak seasons (Mother's Day, Christmas) โ competition is higher, but buyer intent is also much higher and ROAS typically increases.
Reading your Etsy Ads dashboard
| Metric | What it means | Good benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | Times your ad was shown | High is good |
| CTR (Click-through rate) | % who clicked after seeing | 1-3%+ |
| CPC (Cost per click) | What you pay per visitor | Under $0.40 |
| Orders | Sales from ad clicks | Depends on price |
| Revenue | Total revenue from ads | 3x+ your spend |
| ROAS | Revenue รท Ad spend | 3:1 minimum |
Which listings to advertise
Not all your listings need ads. Focus budget on:
- Your bestsellers โ proven converters. More traffic = more sales.
- High-margin items โ ads cost money. Only push products where you can absorb the ad cost and still profit.
- New listings โ ads can jumpstart a new listing to get initial sales and reviews faster.
Turn off ads on: Listings with zero sales after 30 days of advertising. They're not converting โ fix the listing, don't keep paying for traffic.
Offsite Ads vs Etsy Ads
These are two completely different systems:
- Etsy Ads โ you choose to turn on, you set the budget, you pay per click
- Offsite Ads โ Etsy places your listings on Google, Facebook, Pinterest. If a sale results from an offsite ad, Etsy takes 12% of that sale. Shops under $10K/year can opt out.
Offsite Ads are automatic โ you can't choose which listings appear there. But you only pay when they actually result in a sale.
