What to do with each result

A worked example: you want "The Little Wildflower Studio." Without spaces that is "TheLittleWildflowerStudio," which is 25 characters and over the 20-character limit.

1. Drop "The." "LittleWildflowerStudio" is 22 characters, still too long.
2. Swap the longest word. "LittleWildflowerCo" is 18 characters and fits.
3. Or cut a word entirely. "WildflowerStudio" is 16 characters and reads cleanly.

Pick the version that still sounds like your brand when someone says it out loud. Shorter names also fit better on labels and social profiles.

Variations to try when your first choice is taken

Try changes in this order, from the least disruptive to the most:

1. Change the ending word: Studio, Co, Goods, Made, Supply, Workshop, House.
2. Add a short prefix: "Shop," "Hello" or "The" in front, if it still fits within 20 characters.
3. Replace one word with a related one: Oak becomes Birch, Fern becomes Moss.
4. Add something personal: your initials, town or a word only you would choose.

Avoid adding numbers or doubled letters just to get past a taken name. They make the shop harder to find when someone recommends it by voice.

Checks the tool cannot do for you

• Trademarks. A free name on Etsy can still belong to a registered brand. Searching your country's official trademark database is a sensible first step; for anything you are unsure about, ask a professional.
• Website domain. If you plan a website later, check whether the matching .com or another ending is available.
• Meaning in other languages. If you ship abroad, a quick search can reveal an unfortunate translation.
• Lowercase reading. Your shop address is often shown or shared in lowercase. Read it that way to catch accidental words.
